Meeting for Worship

We meet for worship on Sunday mornings from 10:00-11:30am both in person and on Zoom. Expect casual dress and the occasional giggle.

Nursery care is available at 9:50. At about 10:30, children K-5 are invited to separate activities. If you prefer, a child of any age may stay with you during meeting for worship.

West Hills Friends considers its style of worship, "semi-programmed." Although we have at least 20 minutes of silent worship each week, we also invite people to prepare songs and spoken messages. We believe these preparations arise from the practice of listening and contribute to our overall awareness of God's presence.

We will meet in our Community building at the end (rise) of meeting for a snack-luck.

Golden Rule Presentation

Golden Rule Presentation

The Golden Rule is a project of Veterans For Peace to advance the Veterans For Peace opposition to nuclear weapons and war. Read more below.

The Golden Rule was the very first of the environmental and peace vessels to go to sea. In keeping with their Quaker beliefs, the original crew, Bigelow and the others came up with what was then a novel approach: in 1958 they would sail a small craft into the test zone in the Marshall Islands, in an attempt to interpose themselves and the boat between the U.S. Government and its atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons in the Pacific Ocean.

Join the WHF Peace Committee to learn about the voyage around the NW this fall and the project’s continued work and vision.

Light refreshments at 6:30, Presentation at 7:00 PM.

We will have a potluck dinner on December 3 following worship.

Bring a warm dish to share! Also, consider bringing your own plate and silverware to cut down on waste.

This is called a "dinner" because it's more like a meal than the potluck snacks we've been having lately, and is similar to our Monthly Potluck preCovid. Please let Rosalie know if you are interested and able to help with the potluck. We need people to help in the kitchen after it's over.

Threshing Meeting on Membership (in person and on zoom)

Threshing in November
The Threshing Meeting on Nov 5 will be a chance for creative expression, including poems, art, and writing. We will use creative expressions to guide us toward themes and threads, a sense of direction, and to open ourselves up to the bigger picture of membership going forward for the WHF.

What are Threshing Meetings?
Threshing Meetings give us the chance to ask questions, state positions, and express viewpoints, guided by the Spirit. During this process, we can explore all of our options deeply and thoughtfully. This is a process of asking and answering questions and concerns honestly and plainly.  We will not make any decisions during the threshing session. Threshing will help us prepare for decision-making when the Meeting is ready.

World Quaker Day

World Quaker Day

October 1 is World Quaker Day - an opportunity to learn, reflect and act, as we prepare to come together as a global family of Friends at next year’s World Plenary Meeting in South Africa and online, themedLiving the Spirit of Ubuntu: Responding with Hope to God’s Call to Cherish Creation and One Another.

The word ubuntu emphasizes shared humanity, deep connection, and care for creation and one another. It is sometimes translated as ‘I am because you are’ or ‘we are because you are’. It refers to the deeply held belief, morality and custom that every person is worthy of being recognized, respected and heard, and that we as human beings are all interdependent. It is centrally important to the faith and practice of Quakers in Southern Africa.

A short video made by Southern Africa Yearly Meeting, about the Zulu word ubuntu, which means "I am because you are". The 2024 World Plenary Meeting in South Africa and online will be titled "Living the Spirit of Ubuntu: Responding with Hope to God's Call to Cherish Creation and One-another".

Free Online Practice & Discussion Group on September 11

We’re given an opportunity to learn more about our Quaker Faith and Practice hosted by the Quaker Religious Education Collaborative: Monday, 11 September, 4:30 pm Pacific.

WALKING IN THE WORLD AS A FRIEND: ESSENTIAL QUAKER PRACTICES by Nadine Hoover lays out the three jobs all Friends take on when we begin to follow the Quaker path–minister, steward, and witness. For more details and the ZOOM link for the Discussion Group, go here: https://quakerrecollaborative.org/walking-friend-practice-group

Practices like journaling and spiritual companions help us live into these roles as we tend the inward life (minister), align our outward lives to our inward life (steward), and let our lives speak and tell truths we know, publicly (witness).

We hope this free Online Practice & Discussion Group strengthens adult religious education in our lives and meetings. It is facilitated by Nadine Hoover and Beth Collea. Attend as you are able.

We are using Walking in the World as a Friend for reference. You may purchase the book at CourageousGifts.com or download the PDF HERE for free. You may also watch the videos on YouTube.
