Hunger Group

2003 Annual Report

The hunger group has accomplished a lot this year, thanks to the enthusiastic support of the West Hills Friends Church family. We have gone through some discouraging times with our group, as three of our hard-working members have moved away. At this point, our members are Annie Witherspoon, Lorie and Wilbur Wood, Fred Edera, David Schaad, Kay Carlson, and Leslie Logan & Pat Evans as co-clerks. We would welcome more members.

We have taken chicken and fruit to the Potluck in the Park every month this year, with the average donation being $78.00. We appreciate the support very much, and hope that more people in our church family will experience the blessing of helping Portland's hungry people. The green chart hanging in the hallway is where to sign-up. Information and directions are attached to the back of the chart. We could use your help on this.

We were greatly blessed by the generosity of our church for the Transition Projects Dinner in September. We were able to serve a delicious dinner, and leave enough food for another meal. Eight of our servers were first-timers, and we had two WHY group people serving (David Schaad and Mia Edera). We had enough extra money donated to fund the September Potluck in the Park without collecting additional funds. Thirty families donated food and/or worked at this dinner.

We assumed an additional responsibility this year of preparing food bags, containing $10 worth of nutritious food for hungry people who turn to our church for help. We have filled approximately 20 bags, funded by donations from our church people.

We are in the middle of Hunger Month and have collected 620 pounds of food, not counting today's donations. With one more week to go, our goal is 1003 pounds. This food will be taken to the Oregon Food Bank in Multnomah Village.

We are thankful to Mitch, Cynthia, Derek, and Fred & Peg for picking up bagels each week, and for the Ellisons delivering them to the Transitions Projects after church. We have collected many bags of coats and blankets for the homeless, and we deliver those items with the bagels.

We also collected personal items for the Mezz Drop-in Center. We collected several bags. Barbara Reynolds is our contact person for this group.

The WHY group had a spectacular sack lunch auction, raising over $700 for Mercy Corps and Sisters of the Road Cafe. We appreciate their work during Hunger Month.

We thank Mike for an exceptional Hunger Message, and for others who brought First Words.

Next Sunday, we will hear a report from the India Medical Team.

It is wonderful to be part of a church community concerned about the plight of the hungry and the homeless.
