What's Happening at West Hills Friends (Fall 2010)

Youth Calendar

Mark has organized a youth calendar for the fall. The kickoff will be Tuesday, Sept. 14. The group will visit the High Ropes Course at Camp Tilikum over the weekend of October 1-3. For a complete schedule (including parent meetings), please visit the Youth Page.

Woolman Discussion Groups

The WHF Elders are organizing discussion groups for those who would like to read John Woolman's Journal. Woolman was an American Quaker who lived before the Revolutionary War, and was a leader in ending the practice of slavery within the Society of Friends. His "listening spirituality" resonates with many of us as a model of faith. If you'd like to be involved in a discussion group, please let us know. Copies of Woolman's Journal are available from Powell's Books, or through Barclay Press.

Digital Recording Discussion

For a couple of decades, we have made a cassette recording of our meeting for worship. Tapes are given to Sunday school teachers, or others who may have missed worship. Because of changing technology, fewer and fewer people have the equipment for listening to cassettes. Over the fall, we will think about making a switch to digital recording. What are the opportunities of newer technology? What are the potential pitfalls we should avoid? Please plan to be part of the conversation!

Dinner Groups

Over the fall, we organize "dinner groups," to help build relationships in the WHF community. If you'd like to participate, you will be put in a group with 2-3 other "households" (which could mean single people, couples or families with 2.5 children). Once per month, you will schedule a dinner together. It could be potluck, or households could take turns hosting the group. If you're interest, please let us know!

Clearness Workshop

Friends make use of "Clearness Committees" to help discern GodŐs leading on weighty or confusing matters. Multnomah Meeting also uses "Support Committees," which are like ongoing Clearness Committees for people who may appreciate longer-term support. If you would like to learn more about these practices, plan to attend the workshop at Multnomah on October 23.
